SK Hynix Now Has Long & Short ETFs — But "2X" Doesn't Mean What You Think

Think SK Hynix will go up or down? The new L&I ETFs on Rakuten Trade give you different ways to take a view. Here's what Long, Short, 1X and 2X actually mean — in simple terms.

You may have spotted four new SK Hynix Leveraged & Inverse (L&I) ETFs on Rakuten Trade:

SKUU · SKHX · SKDD · SKHZ

If terms like Long, Short and 2X sound confusing, don't worry. The easiest way to understand L&I ETFs is to start with one question:

Do you think the price is going up or down?

📈 Think SK Hynix will go up? → Long

SKUU and SKHX are 2X Long ETFs. They are designed to move about twice the daily move of SK Hynix, before fees and other costs.

For example:

  • SK Hynix +5% today → 2X Long aims for about +10%
  • If SK Hynix falls 5%, the 2X Long ETF aims for about −10%

So, in simple terms: you think SK Hynix is going up → Long.

📉 Think SK Hynix will go down? → Short

SKDD is a 2X Short ETF, while SKHZ is a 1X Short ETF. These are designed to move in the opposite direction to SK Hynix's daily move.

If SK Hynix falls 5% in one day:

  • SKDD → aims for about +10%
  • SKHZ → aims for about +5%

So: you think SK Hynix is going down → Short.

The difference between 1X and 2X is how much the ETF is designed to move each day.

But What Does “Daily” Really Mean?

This is the part you should understand before trading an L&I ETF.

2X does not mean you get twice SK Hynix's return for however long you hold the ETF. It means the ETF aims to deliver about 2X the daily move.

Why? Because L&I ETFs reset their target after each trading day.

Here's a simple example:

Day 1 — SK Hynix rises 10%

SK Hynix: USD100 → USD110

Simplified 2X Long: USD100 → USD120

Day 2 — SK Hynix falls 10%

SK Hynix: USD100 → USD99

Simplified 2X Long: USD100 → USD96

After 2 days: SK Hynix −1%  |  2X Long −4%

Why isn't the 2X ETF just down 2%? Because it was targeting 2X each day's move, not 2X the stock's total return over two days. The calculation starts fresh each day, and the daily gains and losses build on each other. That's what daily reset means. This is why an L&I ETF's result over several days can be very different from simply multiplying the underlying stock's overall return by 1X or 2X.

So why does this matter?

With an ordinary share, you mainly look at where the stock price starts and ends. With an L&I ETF, the day-to-day movements matter too.

A stock that moves steadily in one direction can produce a very different result from one that keeps moving up and down — even if both eventually end at a similar price.

And remember: 2X can amplify losses as well as gains. That's why L&I ETFs are different from simply owning the underlying share.

The New SK Hynix L&I ETFs at a Glance

There is no ordinary SK Hynix share in this particular addition. These four products are L&I ETFs designed around their stated daily objectives.

If you think SK Hynix will… ETF What it does
📈 Go up SKUU / SKHX 2X Long
📉 Go down SKDD 2X Short
📉 Go down SKHZ 1X Short

Before You Trade, Remember These 3 Things

1. Long = Up

You think SK Hynix's price will rise.

2. Short = Down

You think SK Hynix's price will fall.

3. 1X / 2X = The Daily Move

The ETF's target applies to the daily move. It does not automatically mean 1X or 2X the return over your entire holding period. And because these products reset daily, their performance over several days can differ significantly from the underlying stock's overall performance.

The Easy Way to Remember L&I ETFs

Think SK Hynix will go UP? → Long 📈
Think SK Hynix will go DOWN? → Short 📉
See 2X? → Think about twice the daily move.
Holding for more than one day? → Remember the daily reset.

That's the core of it.

Understand what you're trading before you trade it.
